Uveitis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye called the Uvea. Patients usually experience pain, sensitivity to light and decreased vision. Some patients may experience floaters. Most commonly uveitis is caused by an autoimmune disorder although infectious causes are possible. A thorough evaluation is required to diagnose this condition. Treatment can often be long term with eye drops, intraocular medicines or oral medicines. Lab work to detect systemic illnesses is usually performed in cases of recurrent uveitis. This disease can lead to many complications including cataracts, and glaucoma.
